Ramadan Mubarak

Last Monday, marks the beginning of Ramadan. It is a sacred month that is observed by many of our staff and clients. During this period, Muslims are encouraged to fast and give to charity, to show kindness and patience and to strengthen their relationship with God.

At Auburn Children’s Family Centre, Ramadan is a very big deal for all our staff as well as children and families accessing our service. We have decorated our centre to get ourselves involved in the Ramadan mood and to feel enthusiastic about celebrating upcoming Eid. Breaking the fast everyday with dates has always been a Ramadan tradition. Due to the increased cost of living, our families were not able to afford purchasing dates. So we have purchased boxes of dates to give to our Muslim families to break their fast and some for the office too.

Auburn Community Food Pantry Project

Barnardos Children’s Family Centre Auburn were successful in receiving a grant from the DOOLEYS Lidcombe Catholic Club to start a Food Pantry for our Auburn community.

In just less than a month, we have transformed one of our rooms into a storage for foods and necessities. We have partnered with OzHarvest, Aldi and Costco to provide ongoing food supplies to our clients. We have also received a very generous donation of $5000 worth of the food and goods from Tara Anglican School for Girls, with handmade cards and recipes to give to our clients.

Our Food Pantry project will be open to the public every Tuesday between 1pm to 2pm. Clients can also access our food hampers on any other days with booked appointments.

Solar Power Project Launch at Yurungai Learning Centre

Last week we celebrated the launch of our new Solar Power Project at the Yurungai Learning Centre. New solar panels have been installed at our Head Office and various centres as part of our commitment to a net zero future. This milestone event was a great success as we were joined by representatives from Pingala, who have played a pivotal role in this project, and the honourable City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, AO.
We also had the pleasure of hearing from the children at Yurungai – Australia’s future generation. Three students shared dreamtime stories about the sun and drawings of their ‘dream solar home’ which they created at a learning session with Pingala. Their impressive designs included house appliances powered by the sun – plus a solar powered helicopter! A massive thank you to everyone involved, projects such as this are incredibly important for Barnardos, as we continue to create a brighter future for future generations.

Meet Cherie one of our proud Barnardos Buddies

Every donation makes a difference!

Our valued supporters continue to be Barnardos lifeforce. Their generosity allows us to continue our evidence-based programs to keep children safe at home and help those who have experienced abuse to recover and thrive. Recognising the importance of creating stable and reliable funding support for our children, young people and families, we’re so appreciative of the caring Australians who have made the commitment to donate each month to Barnardos through the Barnardos Buddies Regular Giving program.

Cherie is one of our proud Barnardos Buddies.

Cherie joined our regular giving family of Barnardos Buddies in 2014.

What inspired you to become a Barnardos Buddy?
I first came across Barnardos when I began to look for study and work placement opportunities as a part of my Early Childhood University degree. When I saw the great need for foster carers,
I thought I would love to help but I can’t meet that need at the moment. Then I found out that as a Barnardos Buddy I could support children in a really practical way.

Why have you chosen to continue to support Barnardos through regular giving?
Children’s care and safety have always been close to my heart. I have three children of my own, work in the childcare industry and receive regular reports of the amazing work Barnardos do in our local community. I want to help as many children as I can and Barnardos allows me ongoing partnership in doing that.

Why do you think being a Barnardos Buddy is important?
Many children truly think no one cares about them and they don’t feel worthwhile. This small opportunity to be a Barnardos Buddy shows these children that people do care!

Please finish the sentence; “I believe all children…
are valuable and deserve a safe, loving and uplifting place to live and space to grow into all they can be.”

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to all our Barnardos Buddies – you’re all champions for children! It is because of you that we can deliver life-changing services and support.

Happy Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is the biggest calendar event for many South-East Asian and East Asian countries. While traditions and celebrations may differ between communities, Lunar New Year represents a fresh start for all. 2024 is the year of Dragon which is believed to embody power, strength, luck and wisdom.

There is a sea of red and gold at Auburn Early Learning Centre this week with children dressing in traditional costume and making traditional food.

From all at Barnardos Australia, we send wishes for good health, luck and prosperity to you and your families.

New National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children announced

Yesterday, our Prime Minister made a historic announcement confirming that the government will appoint a dedicated National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children.

Our CEO, Deirdre Cheers along with other CEO’s from across the sector have formulated an alliance. ‘ Allies for Children Australia’ and rallied for this change.

Barnardos is committed to approaching culture with humility, respect and curiosity, and eagerly anticipates the partnership between Barnardos and the new commissioner.

Spotlight on Siegfried Leland

My name is Siegfried Leland and I am a Service Centre Coordinator / Concierge based at The Department of Communities and Justice, One Place Service Centre in Coniston. I have worked for Barnardos for almost 6 years, I started out as the first male HIPPY tutor at Barnardos South Coast and have been in my current role for 4 and a half years.

One Place is unique for Barnardos, as we don’t only work directly with children and their families but also work with a wider range of people in the community. Together with my colleague Lauren, we are the first point of contact when DCJ clients present to the Service Centre for assistance.

We see around 400 individual homeless clients per month and have an average of 300 people present to the service centre every week. Most of the clients we assist have very complex factors impacting their lives. Many of them live with psychosocial disabilities, have endured complex trauma, are victims of family and domestic violence and have a history of abuse of alcohol and other drugs. It is also common for our homeless clients to have been involved in the justice system.

A large part of my role as Coordinator is to engage both Government and Non-Government Organisations to provide outreach at The Service Centre for clients. The aim of this outreach is to be able to provide suitable wraparound supports for clients and help to address some of the underlying factors that have contributed to them presenting for assistance. My role also includes organising and conducting regular events within The Service Centre (EG: NAIDOC, RUOK? Day, White Ribbon Day etc) and providing training and support for the Concierge and Security Team as well as many other “duties as required” to keep life interesting.

I take great pride in promoting a safe space for both our clients and other workers. Prior to Barnardos involvement in The Service Centre, police would be called to sight twice a week for clients who had escalated. In the time since we have been on site, this has reduced to once every 2 months and in most instances, only occurs when a client’s mental health has deteriorated, and we have had to call an ambulance to assist the client. This significant reduction stems from our “human” approach to clients, we aim to treat everyone with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Post COVID, the availability of safe affordable housing has significantly declined. This is the single biggest issues faced by the families and young people we assist in The Service Centre. When we couple this with cost-of-living pressures, it is not surprising that we are seeing an increase in families and young people facing homelessness.

My hope is that the children, young people and families that I work with are able to gain safety and stability in their lives. Safety and stability in their housing, relationships, and environments. I hope that they can be motivated to get the right supports, engage with them, and make progress in managing and overcoming the complex issues they face.

In my time with Barnardos, I have always felt fully supported, I have received invaluable training, I have been offered amazing opportunities and have had kind nurturing managers help me develop both in my role and as a person. What can I say, I love working for Barnardos!
