How to adopt a child in Australia

Provide a brighter future for a child in need through open adoption.

Open adoption provides a child with stability for life

Contrary to popular belief, overseas adoption is not the only way to adopt a child in Australia. There are thousands of kids in foster care who are in need of a loving, secure family to call their own, and Barnardos is working to make this happen in NSW.

If you’re looking to start or expand your family, consider giving children in need a sense of belonging, identity and security.

Meet Ronnie and Paul-
adoptive parents of three siblings

Ronnie: I’m Ronnie, I’m 39.
Paul: I’m Paul, I’m 46.
Ronnie: And we’ve just adopted three kids who are age ten, eight, and seven.

Barnardos, if anything, over prepared us. Every piece of information we could possibly want was made available to us. If we had a question, it was answered through all the training sessions, through everything we’ve done. There’s been a very open communication from the very beginning.

We were made aware of every challenge we might face, every issue we might face, every step along the path that we might feel uncomfortable about. We were told everything up front, which I think meant that when those challenges did come, we were ready for them. We knew they were coming and like I said, we were over prepared, so most of those challenges never arrived in the first place.

Paul: Yeah, the transparency from all the way through the interview process, the recruitment process, and the training was, I thought, was exemplary.

But yeah, I remember, it was such a joyous day and joyous week. We met them on the Tuesday, I think it was.

Ronnie: At a park.

Paul: At a park, and then we, I think we took them bowling on the Thursday, the day before they moved in with us. And we were having so much fun. I remember dropping them off the day before they moved in at our house, and we were playing the music on the way back from the bowling alley really loud and ‘Gangnam Style’ came on and we just turned it right up to 11 and the kids just had a ball.

Ronnie: We were sitting in the car like ‘Wayne’s World’ bonding over ‘Gangnam Style’ and dancing, yeah.

Paul: And then Bec, the caseworker was standing outside the car just in stitches

Ronnie: Laughing, yeah.

Paul: And at that moment I think Bec said, “I think we nailed it.”

Ronnie: Mm-hmm. It felt like we’ve arrived. This is it, this is how it was supposed to be.

Paul: This is what we’re supposed to be doing.

Ronnie: Yeah, this was fate and these kids belong with us, and best decision we ever made from the very beginning.

Since they’ve been adopted, it’s a whole new level of normal happy family. You wouldn’t believe the sense of peace and love and security that the kids are feeling.

Paul: The mood lifted the moment they found out our court date and then on the day of the court hearing, they were so relaxed.

Ronnie: They know their history, they know why they were given a new family. They know why they were adopted, it’s part of their identity. They go to school and they talk about it. On the day that they were being adopted, our youngest daughter, she stood up in front of her class and she told her whole class, “I’m being adopted today,” and then she explained to her class what adoption means.

It’s something that they’re proud of, it’s not a stigma and it never will be. It will always be part of their history, they always have a connection to their birth family and we embrace it.

Paul: The connection to their birth family is vitally important for all of us. We all look forward to our visits and they’re always fun and always full of activity and it’s just like any other family occasion, quite literally.

And the kids look forward to it, they look forward to sharing birthdays and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with their family and we teach the kids that there’s no limit to love. So that, you know, you can love your birth family as much and it doesn’t take away the love you have for us.

Once you’re doing it, once you’ve done it, you’ll think, “What was I doing before? Why haven’t I been doing this all my life?” It’s because it’s just so life affirming and wonderful, every day.

Ronnie: And I think, every single day we’ve realised we’ve made exactly the right decision. And I wish more people would think about sibling adoption, and think about adopting older kids.

Paul: In all honesty, people ask me what it’s like to be a dad and every day there’s a little bit of joy in it. And that’s, that’s all. What else is there.

8. Foster care with your child

Your Case Manager will work with you to support your relationship with the child, helping you create a sense of stability, security and belonging through open communication and contact visits with biological family.

Who can adopt?

Barnardos welcomes people of all backgrounds and cultures. You may be a single person, a couple, already have a biological child or children, or be a member of the LGBTQIA community – it doesn’t matter, as long as you (and any other adult household members) meet our eligibility criteria to foster and then adopt a child.

At Barnardos Australia, we welcome individuals and families from diverse backgrounds who have a genuine passion for making a positive difference in the lives of children. If you’re considering opening your heart and home to a child in need, here are some of the requirements for becoming a foster carer in NSW:

  • Age and residency: You must be at least 25 years old and a permanent resident or citizen of Australia to become a foster carer (with exceptions made for Kinship carers). There is no upper age limit at Barnardos.
  • Relationship status: You can be single, married, or in a defacto relationship (heterosexual or same sex relationship).
  • Culture and religion: We welcome carers from all cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Safe and stable environment: Foster carers need to provide a safe and stable living environment for children. This includes having appropriate sleeping arrangements, a clean and comfortable home, and access to basic amenities.
  • Health and wellbeing: Your physical and mental health plays a crucial role in providing effective care. As part of the assessment process, you’ll need to undergo a medical examination and provide relevant health and immunisation records.
  • Smoking status: In accordance with health advice Barnardos seeks to mitigate the impact of second-hand smoke on children in care and therefore does not allow foster carers to be smokers (some exceptions made for Kinship carers).
  • Capacity for parenting: Foster carers should have a child-focused approach and be flexible to meet the needs of children and young people. You should have a willingness to approach a child’s culture with humility, respect and curiosity and an ability to build strong relationships and connections with a child or young person, their family, and the agency and other professionals.
  • Criminal history check: As part of the application process, you’ll be required to undergo a thorough criminal history check to ensure the safety of children in care.
  • Working with Children Check: All foster carers must hold a valid Working with Children Check clearance, which helps ensure the safety and well-being of the children placed in your care.
  • Training and support: Foster carers are expected to participate in training and development programs to enhance their skills and knowledge in caring for children who have experienced trauma or challenging circumstances. Barnardos provides comprehensive training opportunities and ongoing support to help you navigate the foster care journey.

If you meet these criteria and have a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the lives of children, we encourage you to consider becoming a foster carer with Barnardos. Together, we can provide a safe and nurturing environment for children in need, empowering them to reach their full potential.

Take the first step today and apply to become a foster carer with Barnardos Australia. Your support can change a child’s life forever.

Adoption in Australia FAQs

In cases where the court has determined that it’s not safe for children to go back home, open adoption provides security and belonging for life. Through a formal court process, the adopted child becomes a legal member of the adoptive family, whilst still maintaining contact with their biological family. This helps them form a healthy sense of identity which is essential for their development. Read more about why open adoption is best for children here.

Adoption in Australia is regulated by the state governments, and each state has its own set of laws and regulations. In NSW, prospective parents must be assessed by an authorised adoption service like Barnardos, and then there is a mandatory foster care period before a child becomes eligible for adoption.

The first step is reaching out to your chosen agency. With Barnardos, you can enquire online with the form below or via the phone on 1800 663 441.

Local adoption is a process where a child is placed with a family within their own state or territory. This is a great option for families who are looking to adopt a child from their local community and/or have strong ties to the state or territory where the child is located.
In most cases, the process to adopt a foster child or foster children in your care takes between one and two years. This is after the time it takes to first foster children, which could be up to a year.

People tend to think it’s impossible to adopt in Australia and the only solution for people wanting to adopt is to adopt from overseas, however this is not the case!

Open adoption from foster care in NSW is a viable path for people wanting to build their family. There are many children in foster care who are suitable for adoption.

The process of adoption is very involved and can take approximately two years or more from the time a family decides to adopt, to the time when an adoption is finalised.

Working with Barnardos and our experienced in-house teams will help make the process easier and can save time along the way.
