Deirdre Cheers

Chief Executive Officer of Barnardos Australia since 2015

Deirdre Cheers joined Barnardos Australia as CEO in 2015 and is a respected leader in the Australian Child and Family sector, with specific expertise in child protection and children’s social care. She is a passionate advocate for the rights of the child and has published extensively on evidence-based practice and child protection outcomes in Australia and overseas.

As a well-respected voice in this field, Deirdre has held regular appointments on State and Federal Government advisory bodies. She is also a Director of the Association for Children’s Welfare Agencies (ACWA) and held the position of Chair between 2011 and 2019. She has a Master’s degree in Social Work (Research) as well as Public Administration.

Deirdre has led a growing organisation to develop a sustainable organisational strategy in Towards 2025 that builds on Barnardos culture of excellence in Child and Family Services. Her passion for child protection is informed by the belief that every child has a right to a safe childhood.
