Barnardos Australia welcomes today’s National Apology to Victims and Survivors of Institutional Sexual Abuse, delivered by the Hon. Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of Australia. Representatives from Barnardos were present at Sydney Opera House this morning for the live telecast of the National Apology hosted by NSW Premier the Hon. Gladys Berejiklian.
As an organisation providing child welfare services in Australia for over one hundred years, we acknowledge and apologise to those who may have experienced abuse in our care. Barnardos supports and is currently in the process of joining the Australian National Redress Scheme to acknowledge harm caused by all forms of abuse and to provide support to people who were sexually abused as children whilst in the care of an institution.
Today we renew our ongoing commitment to protect children in our care, including robust staff and carer selection, rigorous monitoring processes and always listening to children. We remain dedicated to ensuring all children are safe from any form of abuse, assault or neglect.
