Janett Milligan to become Chair of Barnardos Australia
Barnardos Australia is pleased to announce that Janett Milligan will become Chair from the 1st July 2019. Janett has been on the Barnardos Board since 2016 and a member of the Governance Committee and Chair of the People and Practice Committee.
Following an early career in the non-government sector, Janett has held senior leadership positions in NSW government agencies including Housing, Ageing and Disability and Communities. Throughout, her primary interest has been the delivery of human services for the purpose of bringing about positive change and hope for vulnerable people in need.
Janett also has strong governance experience as a Trustee of the NSW Responsible Gambling Trust and as a director of organisations including Venues NSW and the Western Sydney Parklands Trust. She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Janett succeeds Gabrielle Trainor AO who retires as Chair after six years and a previous 12 years as a Barnardos Director including from 2001 to 2005 as Deputy Chair.
“I am honoured to be appointed Chair of Barnardos, one of the leading child protection and family support agencies in the country,” Ms Milligan said.
“Each year, we support over 14,000 children, young people and families in NSW and the ACT, working with them to ensure the children are living in an environment that is safe, caring and one which allows them to flourish.
“We have over 600 committed staff and a legion of foster carers and supporters with whom we work. The best solution is for children to be with their biological families, but where that is not possible, we seek for them stable, loving foster families from periods of days to an entire childhood.
“We are led by a strong executive team and a dedicated, highly qualified and well-balanced board. We value our very positive relationships with the governments and agencies with whom we work, including on the ACT Together contract, providing out of home care to children in the ACT.
“I thank my Board colleagues for the confidence they have placed in me.”
Gabrielle Trainor said she would miss her role at Barnardos but was delighted to pass the mantle to Janett Milligan.
“I have loved my many years with Barnardos and will always feel part of this wonderful organisation,” she said. “We have evolved considerably over the past years, but one thing never changes - Barnardos will never waiver from our commitment to put children at the centre of all we do.
“I thank Janett and my Board colleagues, our Executive Team, especially CEO Deirdre Cheers and CFO Patrick Kerlin, as well as the whole Barnardos organisation, our sponsors, donors, carers and the governments with whom we work. They have given us unstinting support over these many years.
“I know that support will continue for the benefit of all those children who so richly deserve it.”
