Julia Rollings - 2020 ACT Local Hero
A champion for children’s rights, foster carer Julia Rollings is the 2020 ACT Local Hero.
“It’s a cliché but it was a huge surprise to be nominated let alone receive the award, but it’s an honour,” she says. Julia has been a foster carer for over two decades and in addition to raising nine children – seven adopted, two biological – has looked after 48 children through foster care.
In 2009, she was awarded the Barnardos ACT Mother of the Year Award for her work as a champion for children’s rights. Julia hopes to use the platform provided by the Australian of the Year awards to shine a light on the need for foster carers and encourage others to put up their hands to help some of the most vulnerable in the community.
