Interview with Donna and Gary Murray, foster parents and Deirdre Cheers, CEO, Barnardos Australia. In just 11 years, Donna and Gary Murray have fostered 36 children and raised five of their own. Some of their foster kids have stayed for a few days and some of them for over a year. In Australia, over 48,000 are unable to live with their parent due to abuse and neglect. The Murray Family are encouraging others to step up to the challenge. Donna says they already have five children and their youngest kid started schooling. She mentions how they start to foster caring children. Gary notes the experience of fostering kids is fantastic. He notes every kid is different but all it needs to do is to head them in the right direction and keep moving forward. Cheers says foster parents need the attitude of wanting to help a child. She notes at Barnardos, they wrap their services around every kid. She notes all parents love their children but struggle to raise them. She mentions the significant causes of the lack of foster parents in Australia. Cheers says they want to help parents who consider fostering.
