When a child has a close family member killed by a person using domestic or family violence (DFV), how do the professionals in a child’s life support them?
It’s a confronting question but sadly a necessary one for community based professionals across Australia. Nearly 100 people are killed by perpetrators of domestic and family violence across Australia each year, cumulatively leaving many thousands of children and young people bereaved.
Barnardos Executive Leader, Children and Families, Miranda Moir, collaborated with the Office of the NSW Women’s Safety Commissioner, the NSW Domestic Violence Death Review Team and critically, victim-survivors to develop a practical resource to help professionals.
We are proud of Miranda’s contribution to this important area of practice. This easy-to-read resource offers practical advice to support children and addresses the assumptions people sometimes bring to this complex situation. Most importantly, it has been developed with DFV victim-survivors who have courageously shared their experiences so that others can give the best possible support to children dealing with unimaginable grief and loss.
Miranda’s team here at Barnardos support children and families subjected to men’s use of violence every day. Brave conversations like these require expertise and we acknowledge our dedicated workforce, at Barnardos and beyond, who do this work.
