Staff Spotlight: Meet Ernesta

Hi, I’m Ernesta, and I’m the Program Manager for Carer Support at Barnardos. I’ve been with the organisation for 22 years.

I feel privileged to be part of a team that has inspired me over the years in achieving the best outcomes for children, young people, carers, and families. It truly takes a whole team to support vulnerable children, and I’m grateful for the ongoing support from both my colleagues and management. While we’ve faced challenges along the way, I can wholeheartedly say that we’ve always given our best, and that’s a success in itself.

While studying for a Bachelor of Community Education at the University of Canberra, I worked in retail and volunteered as a telephone counsellor for Lifeline, which deepened my passion for working with people.

As a child, I always knew I wanted to work with others, with a particular interest in becoming a flight attendant.

One of my proudest achievements has been working with the Carer Support team. I’m surrounded by an amazing group of people who are dedicated to supporting carer families, which in turn helps support the children and young people in their care. Parenting children with trauma can be incredibly challenging, but ongoing support during difficult times can make all the difference in maintaining placements and reducing the rate of placement disruptions.

During my time at Barnardos, I aim to continue supporting my team in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This is essential for reducing the impact of vicarious trauma, which can be common in this line of work. The work we do at Barnardos can be stressful, and it’s vital that everyone in this role looks after themselves and takes time out when needed in order to continue providing the best support for families.

Thank you to Australian Mutuals Foundation and Bunnings

On the 26th of April, Australian Mutuals Foundation hosted a Bunnings BBQ held at Bunnings Alexandria to raise funds for a bus to ensure children’s safe journey to the Yurungai Learning Centre.

The AMF team rallied together with great energy and enthusiasm, helping to make the day a sizzling success! Thanks to their hard work and dedication, over $4,600 was raised in support of the Yurungai Bus Appeal — a fantastic achievement that will make a real difference for the children and families we support.

We are so grateful for AMF’s ongoing partnership, commitment, and passion for helping create brighter futures!

Barnardos Australia today announced the launch of “Warrawong Tides,” a four-year film project aimed at fostering community unity.  The initiative, a partnership between Barnardos Australia, Gawura Aboriginal Corporation, Warrawong High School, and CoEqual, is funded by Multicultural NSW.

“Warrawong Tides ” will empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) young people to become champions for community cohesion by providing them with the skills and platform to tell their stories and challenge extremism, hate, fear, and division.  The project will encourage local youth participation, fostering creativity and cultural expression while building sustainable networks and relationships.

Through workshops led by CoEqual, participants will learn film design, storytelling, production, and editing, culminating in the creation of short films showcasing their unique cultural perspectives and experiences. These films will be screened within the community, promoting understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity.

This initiative recognises the vital importance of skills development, confidence building, and a strong sense of belonging in shaping positive futures for young people.  By providing young people with a creative outlet to share their stories, “Warrawong Tides ” aims to build a more inclusive and united community.
