Sydney Grammar School talk about the joy of giving back
We asked staff and students about their involvement in Barnardos Gifts for Kids.
"Sydney Grammar School embarked on a partnership with Barnardos for a Christmas Collection in 2014. In every step along, the way the staff from Barnardos offered suggestions and support to make the collection run smoothly and efficiently with the minimum of fuss. Ranging from ideas what the students should be donating in order to meet the needs of Barnardos’ children, to supplying information for publicity around the School, the staff at Barnardos were very pro-active. This resulted in a very positive experience for both Barnardos and students from our School. Nearly 700 gifts were collected with a value of over $10,000. Just as importantly, students from our School became more informed about the situation faced by many children their own age whom Barnardos assists. Several boys were then involved in attending Barnardos’ warehouse during the school holidays to help sort gifts. The staff at Barnardos provided these volunteers with an opportunity to learn more about the services that they offer. It is Sydney Grammar School’s intention to continue and develop this partnership for the foreseeable future." - John Rimmer, Master In Charge Community Awareness.
"On 8th of December, 2014 five grammar boys, along with Mr. Rimmer, travelled to a Barnardos station near Central Park in the City. We were greeted by a friendly volunteer on our arrival whom assigned each of us different tasks. A few of us received the best task of unwrapping presents and keeping a tally of the number. Others had to determine whether the present was for a male or female and then place it into an age category, which varied from 0-14 years. We ended up unwrapping and sorting a couple hundred gifts by the end of the day. The experience was extremely rewarding, knowing that these gifts would be distributed to those less fortunate. The experience also gave us an insight into how fortunate our lives can be after seeing photos of children having huge smiles on their faces after opening their presents on Christmas morning. I would recommend the experience to anyone and would certainly love to return again next year.'' - Pranav Kalra, student
