Working from Barnardos Penrith, the Housing Community Assistance Program worker provides direct support for residents of Cranebrook Housing Estate. Programs and activities are organised that will improve the quality of life for the residents and increase their contact with the community.
The Cranebrook Housing Estate is a centre of many community activities including craft groups, Foodshare, social gatherings, TAFE classes and training, children’s activities and Barnardos Internet Café.
The Cranebrook Estate has faced many difficulties in recent years. Many disadvantaged families and children reside on the estate and there is a lack of suitable activities and groups for them.
Bus services had been withdrawn from the estate following some local incidents. The Barnardos worker has assisted in mediation with the police and the private bus company and succeeded in winning an award for Crime Prevention and in having the bus service re-instated.
Currently over 500 families live on the Estate, and the program has been adopted as a model for Housing Community Assistance Projects for the Department of Housing.
