Fat Poppy Coffee Supports Mums Beyond Barbed Wire
Boutique coffee roasters Fat Poppy Coffee has partnered with Barnardos Australia to support mums exiting gaol through the Beyond Barbed Wire program. Throughout the month of May for every kilo sold of their specially created ‘Mayde for Mums’ blend, $5 will be donated to Barnardos.
Based in Wellington NSW, the Beyond Barbed Wire program supports women in prison, the vast majority of whom are Aboriginal mothers with children. Beyond Barbed Wire supports these mothers to reconnect with their children, families and the community. Barnardos provides parenting education aimed at improving parenting capacity and parent/child relationships, work placements, training, mentoring and transitional accommodation in short stay housing after release, to prevent mothers from re-offending. Between 2013 and 2018, only 6% of women participating in the Beyond Barbed Wire reoffended, compared to the general rate of 48%.
Fat Poppy Coffee roasters operate under the credo “coffee that cares”. The ethical roasters strive to give back and nurture the growers and communities they partner with. Founder of Fat Poppy Coffee Roasters Sasha McGinley, says;
“I believe that all Mums deserve the chance to be the Mum they hope to be and the Beyond Barbed Wire program, run by Barnardos Australia, ensures that Mums in need are loved and have the opportunity to thrive.”
Shiree Talbot, Program Manager for Barnardos Beyond Barbed Wire is also delighted with the new partnership;
“We are so thrilled that Fat Poppy Coffee believes in our program and the difference that it makes for mothers and children in our community. So often mothers have supported each other over a cup of coffee. With this new partnership, a simple cup of coffee will change the lives of many more women and give them a future.”
Fat Poppy Coffee will also be providing coffee for the “Three Wise Women” coffee cart, a social enterprise born out of Beyond Barbed Wire, staffed by women from the program who are fully trained as baristas. Support the partnership by purchasing a delicious coffee from Three Wise Women coffee cart at the following local events:
