We are proud to announce that Barnardos Australia CEO, Deirdre Cheers has been chosen as an Ambassador for National Families Week (NFW) 2016.

National Families Week is Australia's annual celebration of the importance of families and is held on 15 May to 21 May to coincide with the United Nations International Day of Families on May 15.

Ms Cheers said "everyday families who are doing their best to care for and nurture children, form the backbone of our community".

"When families are in crisis due to violence, mental illness, poverty, homelessness and substance abuse, it's often the children who suffer most," she said.

"It is crucial that families are supported to keep children safe at home - this in turn strengthens communities and gives all Australian children the chance of a better future."

The aim of National Families Week 2016 is to celebrate the vital role that families play in Australian society.

This year the theme is 'Stronger Families, Stronger Communities'. It highlights the important role families play as the central building block of our communities and that community well-being is enhanced by family well-being.

“Families are the most important building block of our society. Stronger families also mean stronger, more resilient communities.” said Families Australia Chief Executive Officer, Dr Brian Babington.

National Families Week is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.
