The first step is to call us to register your interest in becoming a foster carer. A caseworker will talk to you over the phone about the process and send you an information pack. After reading the information if you are still interested, an interview and potential training will be discussed to ensure that you are suitable for our young people’s needs. The process involves interviews, reference checks, a medical check and Working with Children check along with a house safety inspection.

Barnardos offers a range of support to our foster carers. The young person’s allocated caseworker will also meet with the foster carer at least once a month for a formal supervision to discuss the carer’s well-being and to monitor the placement and young person’s progress.

Barnardos has a dedicated 24 hours on call service in case there is an emergency or carers need support after hours. Foster carers are provided with a care allowance to cover the costs of caring for a young person.
