Barnardos' strategy is to support children who may be suffering from, or who are at risk of, abuse, neglect, homelessness or poverty. They may also be at risk of being placed in welfare care. This support is achieved through the following:
- Family Crisis Support Services including crisis foster care, accommodation, brief interventions and practical assistance
- Family Support including home visiting, respite care, childcare, group support and day programs
- Adolescent Services through street work, accommodation and other specialised programs
- Providing permanent families for children removed from their homes by the courts via foster care or adoption
- Work with communities through community development, education and health programs
Barnardos uses knowledge developed through the pursuit of best practise in our welfare programs to improve the lives of all deprived children in Australia by:
- Research, including collaborative research with universities
- Developing practice tools for Government and non-Government organisations, including the Looking After Children (LAC) project, delivery of a Family Services Database, Foster Training Kit
- Professional papers and monographs related to specific welfare practices and welfare related issues
- Corporate plan
Barnardos develops three-year corporate plans within the context of the current Australian society. The values and principles of Barnardos drive key goals in the areas of:
- Services to children and young people
- Child and adolescent sector development
- Community support
- Services and financial management

Barnardos inspiration and values derive from the Christian Faith. These values, enriched and shared by many people of other faiths and philosophies, provide the basis of Barnardos’ work with young children and young people, their families and communities.
