Lending a Helping Hand

As a charity organisation Barnardos relies heavily upon funds raised from the private sector in order to continue to provide many of our programs and services. Every year we can only meet this huge challenge with the help of our dedicated supporters who have ensured the continuation of Barnardos programs through a variety of cash fundraising drives and initiatives.

Many of Barnardos' programs involve one-on-one visiting, guidance and counselling with children and their families in their homes, and while this is a very effective abuse-prevention and family support strategy, it draws heavily on Barnardos' resources. Without the support of our special fundraising individuals and groups**, many of Barnardos’ most urgently needed programs may have to close their doors to children in need.

These extraordinarily motivated and dedicated groups and individuals have shown not only great initiative, creativity and determination, but also unfaltering commitment to providing solutions for kids trapped in a nightmare of brutality and deprivation.

Some of these special organisations and individuals are mentioned below.

** If you are interested in organising a fundraising event in support of Barnardos, please feel free to contact us at Barnardos Australia Head Office (tel: (02) 9281 7933) with your enquiry.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan Committee

The Peter Pan Committee was developed nearly seven decades ago by a group of prominent Sydney socialites who wanted to develop successful event fundraisers to benefit children and families in need, and also to raise the profile of Barnardos’ work with children.

Through the extraordinarily generous and untiring efforts of members and supporters, the Peter Pan Committee has raised over $2 million in aid of Barnardos in the last decade alone. Barnardos owes Peter Pan a profound debt of gratitude for their selfless work, their dedication and their understanding of the desperate need for more child welfare resources.

Designer Clothing Sale

Peter Pan Opportunity Committee also organises a designer clothing sale which takes place twice a year at White City Tennis Club in Paddington. Discerning shoppers can find wonderful bargains in the knowledge that the proceeds go to Barnardos' programs and services.

Young Peter PanYoung Peter Pan Committee members

In 1988 the Young Peter Pan Committee was founded to attract new young supporters and continue the tradition of sparkling social events and fundraising balls and parties.

YPP consisted of a group of dedicated young people who put their time, energy and social contacts to work in a good cause. Following in the footsteps of its parent committee, Young Peter Pan has organised a host of dinners, fashion parades, cocktail parties, raffles and other exciting events and parties, every one of which has been a spectacularly successful fundraiser for Barnardos.

Barnardos is delighted to welcome CFMEU as one of our major sponsors for 2004/2005. CFMEU and their generous, big-hearted members have already been enthusiastic supporters of Barnardos' Star of Wonder Christmas Gift Appeal 2004, raising nearly $17,000 worth of cash, gifts and food for Barnardos kids and families in need.

CFMEU is strongly community-focused and understands the vital importance of a stable and loving family environment for every child. Barnardos looks forward to working with CFMEU and their members to continue a strong and productive partnership for 2005.

SCEGGS Redlands

Fiona McKenzie, Year 3 teacher at SCEGGS Redlands, sister school of SCEGGS Darlinghurst, was very pleased with the response when she suggested that her class might like to do a small fundraiser for charity.

"We wanted to help Barnardos because that would be a good balance, kids helping kids. We also wanted the children to be aware of all the things we take for granted and what it is like for those families who are not so fortunate."

The students were enthusiastic in their response, and collected all their small change in a jar for a month. They also decided that they wanted to do more to help, so the class put their heads together and purchased four boxes of books to donate directly to Barnardos kids in need.

"This is the most wonderful example of how small initiatives can make a real difference," said Glynis Sequeira, Barnardos’ Marketing Director. "Well done SCEGGS students!"
