HSBC has combined forces with Barnardos to devise and finance a unique and innovative web-based model to help disadvantaged children increase their life and learning skills.
The Kids Friends program was developed in Barnardos Canberra Children’s Family Centre to provide a cost-effective and socially responsible model to assist children and families who did not fit the traditional “care” models.
Drawing heavily on volunteer support, this community focused program offers people the opportunity to get involved with their local community and play a part in helping children realise their true potential.
The Kids Friends program plays a significant part in keeping children out of the welfare system and accordingly in early 2002, Barnardos implemented a plan to expand this program interstate to Victoria and Queensland.
This expansion has only been possible with the support of the corporate sector, in particular HSBC Bank Australia Limited. With HSBC’s support Barnardos has been able to set up programs in Victoria and Queensland. In addition Barnardos has developed a website which has become a training tool for developing and setting up this quality program. This move breaks new ground in the welfare system and continues Barnardos' tradition of innovation in this area.
The HSBCkids website was launched in February 2002 at the Powerhouse Museum with mentors, kids, HSBC executives and staff and Hockeyroo Olympic medallist, Katie Allen, in attendance.
