Shedding a serious light on a fun run
A dedicated team of staff from our Canberra centre entered a team in The Canberra Marathon fun run on 9th April to raise crucial funds, and raise awareness about the current desperate need for foster carers in the ACT.
Led by Shannon Bradbury, program manager of the On-Track ACT therapeutic foster care program, the team raised over $800 and would like to send a big thank you to everyone who supported them.
Barnardos Canberra requires more foster carers, regardless of your cultural background, age, marital status or the size of your home. Barnardos can work with you to help a child today, and will provide you with all the necessary training and skills. The On track ACT program was developed, with a particular focus on the recognition of the increasingly complex needs of children and young people in out-of-home care.
“It was perfect weather, there was a vibrant atmosphere and we all had a great day," said Shannon. "We had the odd sore muscle the next day, but that pales in comparison to the challenges faced on a daily basis by the children we care for. We wanted to get out there and let people know about foster care. Foster care is extremely rewarding – it’s an opportunity to offer a child from a severely disadvantaged or abusive background a chance to turn their life round and to watch them grow, thrive and reach their full potential.”
The ‘On track ACT’ therapeutic foster care program provides carers with complete accredited training. Carers receive a higher rate of re-imbursement and receive intensive support in relation to therapeutic parenting.
